The retro style never seems to go out of fashion, and with its bold patterns and bright colours, it's not hard to see why. With summer finally here, it's the perfect time to bring in a bit of retro to your home, especially with our new range of retro curtain fabrics.
Focal Point
With most designers and high street stores selling at least one range of retro inspired designs, the choice can be overwhelming. Start by choosing a focal piece within the room. For example try a statement chair in a retro print, a feature wall of funky wallpaper, or a bright curtain fabric used for a blind to attract immediate attention and interest in the scheme. Once you have chosen this, pick out the colours you like best within the design to bring out in the accessories.
Furniture
For a retro scheme, pick furniture with curved edges and a soft design to them. Dark woods combined with leather work brilliantly together and will help to tone down the colours if you don't want it too overwhelming. In a dining room glass tables look great. For the living room choose a circular or oval shaped coffee table in a dark wood and brighten the room with a funky light pendant.
Textiles
A big part of the design will be the textural elements. Think soft rugs in neutrals mixed with bolder, more woven, textured fabric for cushions. If using a bold print for the curtain fabric then use a check or stripe for the upholstery fabric, or vice versa.
Colour
If bright colours aren't your thing then bring in the theme using softer pastels in smaller prints. Think lemon yellows, muted oranges and powder blues. A pop of colour can always be brought in with the accessories - a brightly patterned ceramic jug or vase looks great against pastel colours.
Vintage
The great thing about this interior design style is the cost. Although you can find everything you need brand new, try looking at car boots and vintage sales for truly retro pieces that can be updated with a fresh coat of paint or varnish. Re-upholstering an old chair or sofa with a retro upholstery fabric looks fantastic.
Less is more
The key to mastering this style is to not over do it. Pick two or three colours that you really like and mix with neutrals. The same goes for pattern as well, if mixing prints, then choose one large print and combine with smaller geometric patterns and checks. Keep furniture to a minimum with just a few key pieces.
With the new range of retro prints in an exciting range of colours, there's definitely a curtain fabric for everyone to begin bringing that bit of retro chic into their homes.
