One inexpensive way to make your girl's bedroom really cute is to stencil the walls. The results may look complicated, but it's actually a very easy process once you get the hang of it.
All you'll need is the right kind of brush, some acrylic paint, a styrofoam plate or two, the stencils of your choice, plain paper, and water. These supplies can be picked up at your local craft store, like Michael's or A.C. Moore.
The brush is most important. It should be designed for stencilling. Stenciling brushes are generally very short and thick with a round, flat end and short, stiff bristles. You can use a rubber band to hold the bristles together if that works better for you.
Acrylic paint is different from watercolor or tempera in that, while it's water based, it's not water soluble after it dries. That means once it's dry, it's permanent; unlike tempera or watercolor, which you can get wet again and change. Latex house paint is similar to acrylic, and can be used for stenciling as well.
You'll want to buy or mix the colors you want to use. You can use as many as you want. Some stencils have different layers that you apply one color at a time, or you can use simple silhouettes and vary the colors. He most durable stencils are plastic, but cardboard ones will work.
If you're doing a girls' bedroom, some suggestions could be: flowers, butterflies, hearts, animals (horses, cats, and dogs are favorites). peace signs, or whatever your daughter likes. You'll probably want to go with theme of your comforter or quilt, and use matching colors.
After you put some paint onto the styrofoam plate, mix in a little water, dip the brush in, and do some test stencils on the paper. Plan out a pattern in the room, and do one color at a time, or just do random prints wherever they look good. You can do the walls, doors, closet doors, ceiling; whatever you want. Your pattern can go around the windows and closet, or just around the ceiling line. If you make a mistake, wipe it off (baby wipes work well) and try it again. You can do this until it dries; after that, you can lightly paint over it with wall paint if you want to change it.
It takes a little practice to learn the technique but it's not hard. It's also inexpensive. Once you have the supplies, and the sky's the limit as to what you can do. You don't have to be an artsy type to do this, either, and there are lots of ideas in books, magazines, and online of ways to decorate your home this way that you can use as inspiration.
