How To Choose A Color Scheme For Your Home

Choosing a color scheme for your home can be a daunting task. It is overwhelming to think that the colors you select will look different once on the walls, and that the work will have to be redone. Colors often intimidate us because we may like a certain shade, but when it appears on an entire wall it takes on a whole new effect for us. This phenomenon is so common that many people simply opt for white walls just because they fear making a mistake that will cost them time, money and a slightly injured pride.
But the truth is, color is what gives personality and style to a space. By shying away from color you will be left with a blank, empty feeling inside the home that no amount of paintings or accessories will fix. So here are a few tips to help you get started in selecting the color scheme for your home.

1.) Take a good look around

Chances are, even though you are doing a redecorating project there are elements of your current look that you find appealing. Choose from one of these elements a color. For example, you may have a favorite Persian rug, oil painting or furniture upholstery. Choose a color from one of these items, and you will have a starting point for your color scheme. For instance, a favorite, prominent oil painting which hangs in the hall may have a dark green color on the canvas. This green can be carried into the foyer or living room, or to the kitchen, which allows you to tie the color scheme to the entire home.

2.) When in doubt, go beige

If you are completely lost when it comes to color, you may need a nudge in the right direction. Some artistic skill comes naturally, but design is something learned over time. The beginner should know that most colors are better than white walls, and that there are a few color schemes that, though may be less than inspired, will never do harm to a room. Simple, soft colors like beige and other earth tones will give a room depth and warmth without giving a room a harsh look or clashing with an existing decor. If you're just starting out, consider giving your living room some quality wallpaper in a beige shade. You will not be disappointed.

3.) Use mathematics

Relax, it's easier than it sounds. All design has a mathematical component. Every room can be broken down into parts. Each of those parts can be given a color, and so long as those colors don't horribly clash, what you will end up with is a professionally designed room. Think of it this way: the walls make up 60 percent of the space. The furniture 30 percent. And accessories 10 percent. With three colors, you can create a color scheme for any room. If you are unsure of the colors to choose, refer to #2. Go earth tones. Soft colors that are easy to match.
